Art people of the internet! I need some wise advice.

What do you guys charge as a base price for commissions? This is starting to become a issue for me, as initially I was charging extremely low (£5, £10, £15) because frankly, I thought my work wasn’t even worth real money and asking people to pay for it seemed sort of wrong. But now I need to start working properly and charging accurately for whatever level my work is at.

My tutors at college say it should be more like £40-£60 (or minimum wage per hour), so I started giving those kind of prices when asked for commissions. I think this has caused me to lose some potentially good work and because these people simply stop replying, I have no idea whether its because I’m over-charging.

Does anyone have any answers?
